Features

Six ways to test, from the first sketch of a menu to the finished page.

Tree test

Can people find it in your menu?

Paste your site structure as a text-only menu and ask people where they’d find things. You see success, directness and first clicks for every task, plus pietrees showing each route people took.

Best for: new navigation, IA changes and label decisions.See a sample report
First-click test

Do people click the right thing first?

Show people a screen, such as a live page, a mockup or a wireframe, and ask where they’d click to do a task. Heatmaps and click maps show where every first click landed, and how many hit the right spot.

Best for: homepages, landing pages and design options before you build.See a sample report
Five-second test

Does the message land straight away?

Show a design for a few seconds, then ask what people remember. See the words that stuck, how many recalled your key message, and how clear people found it.

Best for: first impressions, headlines, value propositions and brand recall.See a sample report
Card sort

How do people group your content?

Give people a set of cards to sort into groups: their own, yours, or both. An agreement matrix, suggested groupings and the names people chose show you how to structure your navigation.

Best for: planning a new navigation, or checking where content belongs.See a sample report
Preference test

Which design do people prefer, and why?

Put two to six designs side by side, as uploads or screenshots of live pages. People choose one and say why. You see each design’s share with its likely range, whether the winner is clear or could be chance, and the words people used for each.

Best for: choosing between design directions, layouts, logos, imagery or copy.See a sample report
SurveyNew

What do people think, and how does it change?

Ask your own questions: open text, choices, ratings, yes or no, rankings, rating grids and likelihood to recommend. ClickTree works out the Net Promoter Score and usability scores (SUS and UMUX-Lite), compares groups, and tracks every round against the last.

Best for: satisfaction, feedback after a launch, and measuring usability over time.See a sample report

Everything you need to shape a navigation or test a design, and nothing you don’t.

Live results

Success, directness, first clicks and timings for every task, updating as each participant finishes.

Paths, heatmaps and recall

See every route through a tree, exactly where people clicked on a screen, and what they remembered after a glance.

Client-ready reports

Download a PDF report with key findings, or export everything to CSV.

01

Paste your structure

Type or paste an indented outline and it becomes a clickable tree. Rename, reorder and nest without touching a spreadsheet.

02

Screenshot any page

Paste a URL and ClickTree captures the page at desktop or mobile size, with cookie banners hidden. Or upload a design or wireframe.

03

Write real tasks

Mark the right answers in the tree, draw the areas that count as a right click, or ask what people remember. Randomise the order and let people skip.

04

The right participants

Share one link. Screening questions and quotas make sure you hear from the right people, link tags show where each came from, and careless responses are flagged for you.

05

Findings in plain English

ClickTree points out what to fix first, compares groups such as mobile and desktop users, and tracks each round against the last. No AI, just clear rules and standard statistics.

06

Made for client work

Each study can carry a client’s logo and colours, and a password-protected link lets clients watch live results without an account.

1

Build

Paste your site structure, or add a screen or URL, then write the tasks you want people to complete.

2

Share

Send one link to participants, a research panel or your client’s customers.

3

Learn

Watch results arrive live, find the weak spots and share a report.

Security and privacy

Secure and private by design, for you and the people you test with.

Hosted in the EU

Your studies, results and images are stored in Frankfurt, Germany, with the database and files kept in the EU.

Encrypted in transit and at rest

Every connection uses HTTPS, browsers are told never to fall back to plain HTTP, and stored data is encrypted at rest.

Private workspaces

Each workspace is walled off in the database itself. Only people you invite can open your studies, and invite links work once.

Passwords and payments kept safe

Passwords are stored only as a secure one-way hash. Payments go through Stripe, so we never see your card number.

No tracking, no selling

No analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. We never sell your data, and never use it to train AI.

Kind to participants

Participants need no account and get no cookies. Their IP addresses aren’t saved with their answers, and you can delete any response at any time.

Read the details in our Privacy Policy. A data processing agreement is part of our Terms, for client work under UK and EU data protection law.

About

Made by designers who design experiences for a living.

ClickTree started as an in-house tool, for our independent experience design studio in London and San Francisco. We wanted something quick to set up between workshops, clear enough to put in front of a client, and private by default.

It’s focused on purpose. Participants see your client’s brand. Your data stays in the EU, in a workspace only your team can open. And the results tell you what to fix, not just how many people clicked.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is tree testing?

Tree testing checks whether people can find things in your navigation. Participants see a text-only version of your menu and choose where they’d go to complete realistic tasks. Because there’s no visual design or search to lean on, it shows how well your structure and labels work on their own.

What’s the difference between tree tests, first-click tests, five-second tests, card sorts, preference tests and surveys?

A tree test checks your menu structure before anything is designed. A first-click test shows people a screen, such as a live page, mockup or wireframe, and records where they’d click first. A five-second test shows a design briefly, then asks what people remember, to check whether the main message lands. A card sort asks people to group topics in a way that makes sense to them, which helps you plan a navigation before you test it with a tree test. A preference test puts two or more designs side by side, asks people to choose one and say why, and tells you whether the favourite is clear or could be chance. A survey asks your own questions, from ratings and rankings to likelihood to recommend, and works out scores such as NPS and SUS for you.

How many participants do I need?

For tree tests, aim for around 50 people per group you want to report on. Patterns appear from about 30. For first-click and five-second tests, 30 to 50 is usually enough. For card sorts, patterns usually settle from about 15 to 20 people for an open sort, and 30 or more for a closed sort. ClickTree shows a likely range next to each result, so you can see how certain a number is.

Do participants need an account?

No. You share one link. Participants don’t sign up, and they can pick up where they left off on the same device. You can optionally ask for a name, email or gender, on the Studio and Enterprise plans.

Can I use my own participants or a research panel?

Yes. Send the link to your customers, mailing list or colleagues. If you use a panel, ClickTree can record each person’s panel ID from the link and send them back to the panel when they finish.

Can I test a live website?

Yes. For first-click and five-second tests, paste a page address and ClickTree takes a screenshot at desktop or mobile size, with cookie banners hidden. For pages behind a login, upload a screenshot or design instead.

Can I ask follow-up questions?

Yes. Add questions after any task, and at the end of a study, including the standard ease rating (SEQ) and System Usability Scale (SUS). Rules let you ask some questions only to people who, for example, didn’t find the answer.

Can I compare groups of participants, such as mobile and desktop users?

Yes. Results can be filtered to one group, and the Segments view compares two groups side by side on every measure, saying whether each difference is likely real or could be chance. Groups come from link tags (for example ?group=customers), device, screening questions and any choice or rating question.

Can I share results with my client?

On Studio and Enterprise, create a read-only link to a study’s live results, with an optional password and expiry date. Clients don’t need an account, and the link never shows participants’ names, emails or panel IDs. You can turn it off at any time. Every plan can export to CSV.

Does ClickTree use AI?

No. The findings in your results come from fixed rules applied to the numbers, so the same data always gives the same findings. Your studies and results are never used to train AI models.

Where is my data stored?

In the EU, in Frankfurt, Germany. Each workspace is separated at the database level, so only your team can see your studies and results. We don’t use advertising or tracking tools on participant pages.

Is ClickTree secure?

Yes. Every connection is encrypted with HTTPS and stored data is encrypted at rest. Passwords are kept only as a secure one-way hash, payments are handled by Stripe, and invite links work once and expire. We never sell your data or use it to train AI, and a data processing agreement is part of our Terms for client work under UK and EU data protection law.

What does the free plan include?

All six test types, 1 live study at a time, up to 5 responses per study and 50 responses a month, with live results and CSV export. No card is needed.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes. Studio is £10 a month, or £96 a year billed annually. Enterprise is £180 a year. Prices include VAT. If you cancel, your plan stays active until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
